H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu)

H1N1 is a novel virus that has not been seen in humans prior to the spring of 2009.

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

  • fever of 100 degrees or greater,
  • body aches,
  • coughing,
  • sore throat,
  • respiratory congestion, and
  • in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting.

Individuals who are experiencing symptoms should contact their doctor

To reduce the spread of disease, please take the following steps:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer,
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands,
  • Cover you cough or sneeze,
  • Stay home when you are sick, and
  • Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and adequate rest.

Clinic Information

The ACIP and KDHE recommends that the following subset of the initial target groups receive priority for vaccination until vaccine availability increase:

  • Pregnant Women
  • Persons who live with or provide care for infants less that 6 months of age (parents, siblings, and daycare providers, etc.)
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel who have direct contact with patients or infectious material
  • Children 6 months through 4 years of age
  • Children and adolescents who have medical conditions* that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.
*Chronic medical conditions that confer a higher risk for influenza-related complications include chronic pulmonary (including asthma), cardiovascular (except hypertension), renal, hepatic, cognitive, neurologic/neuromuscular, hematologic, or metabolic disorders (Including diabetes mellitus) or immunosuppression (including immunosuppression caused by medications or by human immunodeficiency virus).

The Health Department is now serving the all residents of Geary County.

**Because the vaccine is given to counties by their population numbers, ONLY GEARY COUNTY RESIDENTS WILL BE VACCINATED.

The Health Department will be closed on Thursday November 26 and Friday November 27 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
