CHRONIC DISEASE RISK REDUCTION

Americans are faced with an abundance of health issues, that if not resolved, impact our wellness in a negative way. Smoking, obesity and lack of movement are three things that cost little to correct and are a positive factor in regaining and maintaining individual and community health. When uncorrected, smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, diet poor in nutritional value and lack of movement can result in high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, pulmonary disease, poor circulation, kidney disease. The list goes on and on. Our children face conditions and diseases like attention deficit disorder, ear infections, asthma, heart disease and SIDS as a result of exposure to second-hand smoke.

The Health Department provides education about the risks of tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke. We also provide opportunities to move and exercise by supporting Walk Kansas, the American Heart Walk, and by supporting the Extreme Couch Potato 5K walk/run. The Health Department also provides information on healthy eating and collaborates with the K-State Extension and Research office to help families develop a better nutrition plan.
